I can't stress how important it is that people please contact us immediately if you hear something that sounds sketchy, far fetched, or just downright asinine. Some of the misinformation is coming from within, but most is coming from those outside of the fire deparment that have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. We've heard everything from we bought a $300,000 brand new rescue truck (we bought an $85,000 used rescue truck) to our ISO rating will increase because we don't have our pumper (the rate is not increasing and our pumper is in the shop for repair). The jealousy of others and the dislike of some of the members of the fire department have caused some people to go on a witch hunt. This does nothing but create undue stress and heartache among those that are simply trying to provide the best possible fire protection to the citizens of Appleby and ESD #3. Also, don't believe everything you read in the newspaper folks, they seldom get things right when it comes to anything dealing with the volunteer fire departments in Nacogdoches County. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Fire Chief Dave Crawford or myself at the numbers listed below. You can also send us an email at applebyfire@hotmail.com.

For the first time in years, the BBQ sold out! There was nothing left, not even a pickle or slice of onion. Your generositywill allow us to continue to upgrade our equipment and continue to serve the citizens that we protect. We cannot thank any of you enough.

Since the BBQ is over, members get to return to the "fun" behind the scenes work that we do. Hydrant testing and maintenance will start in April, the continued work to finish out the upstairs of our building will continue as well. Thanks to a donation from the Knights of Pythias, we are in the process of completing the bunkrooms, weight room, and equipment storage areas. Also members will put the finishing touches on Rescue 13, our "new" heavy rescue apparatus. This truck is the first of it's kind in the county. Stay tuned for more details on these projects. As always, if you have a question, comment, or concern (and a lot of you do) please feel free to stop by the fire station or give us a call or send us an email.

It's BBQ time again! August was our busiest month so far with 65 runs. That may not seem like much compared to some departments, but for a department our size that is a substantial increase from the usual 30-40 calls a month. Like every other department in Texas, we saw a large increase in the number of grass and woods fires in the months of August and September. Some notables include The Angelina River Bottom Fire in the Western part of Nacogdoches County as well as assisting Cherokee County with a large fire just East of the Nacogdoches County line.

We also saw a sad time as Bert Appleberry, one of the founding members of the Appleby Fire Department passed away. The department members attended the funeral to pay tribute to Mr. Appleberry and his family.

The Department also conducted a tanker shuttle drill to help our ISO Rating. After our inspection in April we received a rating of 4/5/8b, which was down from a 5/6/9. After completing the tanker drill, we are optimistic that our rating will drop to a 4 throughout the district maybe even a 3. This would translate into a substantial savings for the homeowners in the district.

Nacogdoches County is still under a burn ban even though we got rain. The penalty for a burn ban violation has increased from a simple fine to jail time. As always we ask that you be safe with all of your outdoor activities. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or praise for the fire department please feel free to give us a call or shoot an e-mail our way.

Thank you for your support!

Dry weather keeps crews busy..

Appleby and surronding departments have been busy over the weekend with woods fires.
